Silver and Black

The chessboard is flame cut from 12 gauge mild steel and hinged in the middle.  When open, the board is approximately 15" X 15". The board squares are 1 3/4" square.  The blue gray steel mill finish has been acid etched to have contrasting silver squares.  There are highlights of rust on the silver squares and the etched silver pieces. 

The piece bases are 1 1/2" square from flame cut 1 1/2" X 1/2" channel steel.  The Kings, queens, rooks and bishops bodies are from 1" square steel tubes. The knights and pawns bodies are from 1/2" round and square steel. The kings are approximately 3 1/2" tall and the pawns are approximately 2" tall. 

Black and Gold

An alternative color for the non-black pieces is a coppery rust color.  A thin patina of copper is acid washed onto the pieces and quickly rinsed to bring out rust and copper highlights. 

The board top is finished with paraffin so as to be self healing from dings at the end of play.  The pieces are finished with clear acrylic.
